Virtual Arctic Multi-School events

Virtual Arctic Multi-School Events

Wicked Weather Watch and Create2Inspire are partnering to offer monthly, whole-day, interactive, virtual multi-school experiences that will take Upper Key Stage 2 pupils on an exciting journey to the Arctic. We will explore the enquiry question, “What is so cool about the Arctic?”.

Curriculum links and key skills gained:

  • Geography
  • Numeracy/Maths
  • Literacy/English
  • Critical thinking
  • Locational knowledge
  • Physical and human geography
  • Supports a transition to KS3

During the event, pupils will learn about:

  • The Arctic
  • The tundra biome (climate, soils, flora, and fauna)
  • The people that live there
  • The impacts of climate change upon this fragile region and its inhabitants
  • How we can reduce our own carbon footprint in the UK to ensure the sustainability of our planet

The day will provide an opportunity to hear from a real-life explorer, Nanou Blair Gould, who travelled to the High Arctic Archipelago by tall ship. Among many extraordinary things, she witnessed the effects of global warming first-hand. Nanou was so invigorated by the adventure – the people, life outdoors, the sense of purpose – that she joined the ship again, working among the small crew for almost four months.

There are plenty of interactive opportunities throughout the event, including creating igloos from sugar cubes, acting out short drama pieces, asking our explorer unique questions and even having a go at some challenging maths.

Check out what we’ve done on previous events to get a better feel for the day through these blog posts: January, February, and September

We offer sessions on a first-come first served basis as we have limited availability for each event. Our price of £150 is a subsidised price based on being able to offer this session to multiple schools across the UK.

If you are a school that is at or above the national average for free school meals (24%), we can offer the session to you for free. If this applies to you, get in touch with the WWW team and we can discuss further.

What to Expect After Booking

If participating in this event, we will offer a preliminary meeting approximately one week before the session date to allow teachers to ask any questions they have and to go through the content and schedule of the day in more detail.

After this meeting, Wicked Weather Watch will send out a resource pack with some minimal printing required for the event and an invoice for your school. Invoices can be paid by BACs.

FAQs

Each school will be sent (via email) a pupil resource pack and a teacher resource pack. In the pupil pack, there will be five activity worksheets to print per child. The teacher pack will have answer sheets so teachers can follow along throughout the day.

The event will start at 9:00 am and finish at 3:00 pm. We will have a morning break from 10:30 am - 11:00 am, and lunch break at 12:30 pm- 1:30 pm.

We understand that each school schedules lunch breaks at different times and this can often not be changed on the day. If you have to go to lunch a little earlier or later during the event - don't worry. We are flexible with the activities we provide before lunch so you can do them as a class either before you go to lunch or when you come back. Just ensure that you are back in your seats by 13:30 so you don't miss the explorer talk!

Yes, the session will take place on Zoom. Therefore, all classes must have a working microphone, speakers, and webcam to participate in the event as we try to keep these sessions as interactive as possible.

If there are children in your class that do not have parental consent to have their photos taken, please ensure they are out of the camera frame as we will take screenshots throughout the session.

Absolutely! If you want to continue your learning after this session, please access our free teaching resources here.

All you have to do is sign up with WWW (if you haven't already) and then you will be able to use 40+ free teaching resources all about climate change and the Arctic.
